The Upper Valley Dog Club (UVDC) was formed in March 1983. Most schools and colleges in Calderdale had, by this time, cancelled all dog training classes on their premises for reasons of hygiene. The founder members had all been previously training their dogs together at the Todmorden College.
The early days were exciting times. Our first (and still the best) “home” was at Priestwell Church Hall which had the luxury of two separate training areas. Additional trainers were borrowed from the Calderdale Alsatian Obedience Club (CAOC, now sadly no more) in Halifax. In good weather we were also able to work outside much to the joy of the dogs!
Eventually, after thirteen years, the hall was required for other purposes and on 31st July 1996 we moved to Cornholme Youth Centre. We were there until the next move on 28th May 1998 to Walsden Trinity Church Hall. The final move to date, on 19th April 2001, brought us to the current venue, the Fielden Centre in Ewood Lane.
The greatest legacy from the early days is the continuing friendliness of all concerned. Dog owners from every walk of life are welcomed and, in addition to training, we hold social events whenever possible just to enable members to learn a little more about each other and, obviously, to talk DOGS!
